A Wet Snow

Mother natures see saw spring continues. One day it's in the 50's, next day we have 6 inches of snow on the ground. This was a wet one, stuck to everything. Supposed to be back up to the 50's in a day or two. It's 27 now.
Top picture is of our tomatoe cages. Anyone for ice tomatoes ;^) X.

Minnesota Run! (Got My Fishin Boots On)

Last sunday I got a call from one of my buddies I served with in Vietnam. Doug says,"the fish are bitin'". So off I went tuesday morning. Arrived in Rogers Minnesota about three got my liscense and we were off to the lake. Spent the next two days catchin' mostly sunfish. It was in the 40's those two days so the fishin' had slowed a little, but we still had a good time. Ice on the lakes up there was 24" to 30" thick, so we were able to drive out onto the lake. Also went to a local highschool hockey game. That was a new experience for me. Almost enjoyed it as much as catchin' fish. Doug and I had a good visit talking about old times. That's Doug in the pictures with some of our fish and riggin up a tip up.
Called GiGi thursday and she said it had been in the 60's while I was gone, so when I got home yesterday the snow was all gone. What a difference a few days can make. Hoped it would stay warm but the forecast is calling for more seasonal weather, so it will be back in the 30's and 40's this next week. X.

Problem Child!!

Our older Boxer, Greta was very good about not bothering things as she grew up. Just wasn't one to mess with stuff. Zeus, our young male Boxer is a complete opposite. He is curious about everything. He especailly loves to eat the dirt out of the flower pots. So, he will get a mouthful and pack it over to a rug and munch down, unless we catch him first. I happened to catch him red handed here.
He's also interested in our parrots, and will stick his nose right up against thier cages. We say no and make him stay away, but I'm thinking he will learn the hard way after one of them takes a chunk out of his nose. Anyway, I hope not. X.

Oldest Grandson

Twenty plus years ago, me holding my oldest grandson, Brandon. He's all grown up now. Just finished a law enforcement academy in the Kansas City area. Shouldn't be long before he is working for one of the police departments in one of the suburbs. Top picture is Brandon and his mom, my daughter Trisha.
Just seems like yesterday. Looking at this picture, it's hard to imagine so much time has passed. Seems like the older I get, father time just turns on the jets. X.

Spring???Maybe!!!

Ok, we're still very cold here today, it's 7 degrees. But, looking at the forecast for next week, it looks like we are in for a major thaw. Temps start to warm up this friday into the 30's. By next week it is supposed to be in the 50's, so if I'm going to get any ice fishing in, I better get with it.

Had a nice visit with my daughters and grandkids this past weekend. Don't get to see them near enough.

I've started another blog. It seems i have a hard enough time keeping this one going but craziness kicked in ( must be cabin fever). Any way I started a new one called 'Darkside of the Moon'. I have a button for it at the upper right. X.

More Stuff

Sam still hasn't decided which was worse,
the stove or the mattress.
When he was ready to move it in,
he went scourin' the countryside
for stuff to sit on, eat from, keep things in,
and a place to sleep.
All the farmers for miles around
thought he was a crazy hippie.
Some laughed, others told their kids
to git back inside while they sic'ed the dogs,
or ran him off with the shotgun.
Their wives liked the twinkle in his right eye,
and that wry smile,
they thought his truck fit him as good as his jeans.
Sam says,"I knew what I was doin'."

Before long, Sam had an easy chair
with a hole in one arm,
a great big pot bellied stove,
two kitchen chairs, a folding table
three dressers (one he keeps in the kitchen),
and an old bedframe. A cute little blond
gave him a feather mattress
that leaked from two or three
places in the seams.
Sometimes one of those feathers
will get loose and tickle his neck,
says it reminds him of her hair when she
rested her cheek on his shoulder.

Have you ever tried to haul a thirty pound,
seven foot long, three foot wide,
limp bag of feathers up a tree?
After an hour and seventeen minutes,
Sam couldn't think of anything to laugh about,
an had to go take a bath in the crick.
He was so mad it took him two days
to think of haulin' it up with a rope.

He'd already decided to leave the stove
on the ground and climb down to it
if he needed to get warm
when Joe showed up with a block and tackle,
and helped to rig it up.
Sam's pretty comfortable these days.

Daytona????????????

The Daytona Bike Week is one ralley I haven't been to. It's the first of March. But with this long winter and mounds of snow all over the place it sure looks inviting this year. Don't ya think if I just dream about going, it will help? X.

Breakfast

Sam eats a big breakfast
Drinks strong coffee, black;
eats country ham and fresh eggs.
Slices a tomatoe from the garden,
says he could have gotten rich
on his recipe for biscuits.
Makes it all on a camp stove
up in his treehouse.
Once in awhile,
he gets to make breakfast for two.
He wonders how Louise can stay
so skinny, and eat so much.

Breakfast is why he keeps chickens and hogs.
Has 'em way out back on his property
downstream from where he bathes in the crick.
Says "in some ways,
they're no different from other folks."

Imbolc On A Three Dog Night

"Brighid is the Lady Of Flames,
the fire that cooks our food!
Hail to her and to the hearth
and may our meal be good!"

I used to think that the band,Three Dog Night, got their name from an eskimo saying. But later found out it was an Australian Aborigini saying. When it got real cold they would say it was a 'three dog night'. They would bring three dogs into the hut to keep them warm. Tonight will be a 'three dog night', with temperatures well below zero. Brighids flame will come in handy as well. X.

P.S. We had 24 plus inches of snow, with drifts in town that were 4-5ft. deep. In the more open country areas there were drifts of 6-8ft. deep. Interstate 70 was closed thru the night and into today. The blizzard of 2011 was a dandy. The most snow we have had at one time since the 1960's.

Happy Birthday to my grandson Layn. Love Ya Buddy

Blizzard of 2011

Well it's finally here. After three days of advance warning and reports from the national weather bureau our blizzard has arrived. With expected snowfall of 15 to 20 inches and below zero temperatures. We had freezing drizzle over night and the snow and wind started this morning about 8:00 A.M.
Now days a blizzard doesn't have the impact as it did in the past. With our modern conveniences, and 4 Wheel drive vehicles. For most of us it's business as usuall. The primary concern is a power outage in these extreme temperatures. But for those who can afford them, portable generators will solve that problem. It's a far cry from what the effects were a hundred years ago. And there is still the possibilty of becoming stranded in a vehicle for an unlucky few who try traveling in a two wheel drive auto. We are more fortunate today than our ancestors. For them, many times a blizzard was life threatening. It still can be, but normally isn't if we use some common sense. That may be as simple as staying home and not going out. X.
